APHNYS 2024 Annual Conference - Port Jefferson, NY

Region 7:

The Region 9 Historian’s meeting will be Saturday, May 10 at the Delphi Falls County Park (2006 Cardner Road, Cazenovia). The event will be from 9 am to 1 pm. If you’ve never been to this site it features a beautiful two-tier waterfall as well as trails throughout the park. We will be having our the meeting at the newly built conference center.

This year’s speakers will be:

Derrick Pratt of the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse and possibly one more organization who will talk about the upcoming Erie Canal Bicentennial and what is happening locally and across the state

Kristin De Lucia, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Colgate University, she will talk about a project she has done for a few years which takes students out of the classroom and to a former mill site to learn about the families that lived there.

Dorothy Willsey (from the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum & The Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark) & Mary Liz Stewart (Of the Underground Railroad History Project and the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence of Albany) from the Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State will speak on the 2027 bicentennial of the Abolition of Slavery in New York State and how we can get involved.

The APHNYS 2024 Annual Conference will be held in Port Jefferson, NY, on Long Island, September 16-18, 2024. Attendees from upstate NY are encouraged to travel to Port Jefferson via the ferry from Bridgeport, CT. For more information, please see the "Travel & Lodging" section of the conference website.

On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, three field trips will run concurrently around the Village of Port Jefferson (tours are free with full conference or Tuesday registration). Registrants may sign up for one or all three tours.

Guides will walk participants to Drowned Meadow Cottage Museum, The Mather House Museum at the Historical Society of Greater Port Jefferson and the Village Center/Archive/Wooden Boat Building Campus. Between stops, guides will provide walking tours. Participants can drive to the two museums, but parking is limited. Walking is encouraged.

Drowned Meadow Cottage features a small museum dedicated to the Village’s role in the American Revolution.
The Mather House Museum is a multi- building complex: the home of John R. Mather and his son, John T. Mather, two of Port Jefferson’s prominent shipbuilders; a tool shed, a sailmaker’s loft and a clock museum.
The Village Historian will show the Village Center, the photo archive and the Boat Building Shed. (A limited number of people will be invited to submit a digital photo for enlargement by Chris Ryon, Port Jefferson Village Historian. If you select this tour option, we will send a follow-up email.)

Additional presentations will be held at the conference center during the tour hours, for anyone who only wants to attend one of the tours or does not care to walk on the tours.
